The inaugural Multicultural INSPIRE Awards took place on Saturday, paying tribute to the nation’s most inspirational people in a star-studded ceremony. 12 victors, four honorees and outstanding live performances made the INSPIRE Awards event a winner for all.
Bringing nearly 600 guests together – making it one of the largest independently run award ceremonies dedicated to championing ethnic minorities in the UK, the INSPIRE Awards honoured figures who have gone over and above for the corporate and community sectors over the past year.
Amongst the winners was the legendary Moira Stuart CBE, the first Black Woman to present national news, who was recognised with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Honorary’ award; Dame Denise Lewis was also presented with the ‘Icon Honorary’ award for her work in athletics, breaking down barriers for the next generation of Black girls wanting to get into sport and media; and the ‘Trailblazer Honorary’ award was awarded to Angie Le Mar, the first Black female comedian. Dr. Beverly Lindsay also scooped the Special Recognition Honorary for her incredible achievements and advocacy work for her native country, Jamaica.
The INSPIRE Awards featured 12 categories ranging from Outstanding Contribution to Charity and Community and Outstanding Contribution to Social Change. Tony Wolf, Founder of Floor Street was crowned the Most Inspirational Entrepreneur of the Year and Khamani Edwards was chosen as this year’s inaugural ‘Rising Star’ after he founded KJ’s Craft Time after being diagnosed with Dystonia, a neurological condition affecting and Sheniece Charway, Head of Music Culture at YouTube was crowned the Outstanding Contribution to Leadership.
The awards also saw barrister, Dr. Tunde Okewale named as ‘Outstanding Community Champion’ for his dedication to making law accessible to everyone; and award-winning women’s activist organisation, Women in Sport who took home the accolade ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sport’. Selina Brown, the Founder of Europe’s largest Black Book Festival also took home the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Diversity & Equality Award’.
The magic of the evening was also captured during the honorary award presentations. Legendary Linford Christie presented the Icon Achievement Honorary award to Dame Denise Lewis in a poignant speech, TV personality Scarlette Douglas presented to Moira Stuart CBE, and Superstar singer, Jamelia presented to Angie Le Mar.
Speaking about the inaugural event, Dr Tru Powell, the organiser and Chief of Vibes of the ceremony said,

As well as the award-winners, the event, hosted by famous faces Leah Charles-King and comedian/actor and entertainment veteran, Kane Brown. The event also welcomed guest presenters from TV personalities such as The Chase’s Shaun Wallace, social media sensation Luke Vernon and entrepreneur and investor, Tim Armoo. Outstanding performances were delivered by Birmingham’s own BRSKO; to Aston Performing Arts Academy, Bianca Passelle Reid, Khadeja and Phebe Edwards.
In the spirit of the event, the INSPIRE Awards also collaborated with Black Women Rising, this year’s chosen charity partner. With this year’s event theme centering Black Women, the INSPIRE Awards was proud to raise vital funds and awareness for BWR, shining a much needed light on how cancer affects women of colour.
